Curriculum Overview - KITAH HEY Teacher: Devorah Lichterman
Texts Shalom Ivrit III: Welcome to Modern Hebrew Shalom Ivrit III Prayer Companion
Basic Judaism I: Israel text and workbook
Introduction to Kings, Later Prophets & Writings text and workbook
Hebrew
Shalom Ivrit III will continue to teach students to read and understand Modern Hebrew. Through stories, dialogues and poems, Shalom Ivrit III will
· develop a level of reading fluency and comprehension that will help students acquire Hebrew
language skills
· build skills sequentially and incrementally, while at the same time continually reinforcing and assessing students’ learning
· introduce carefully selected and controlled vocabulary and present Hebrew grammar rules, simply and clearly; after students have encountered them in the context of each chapter story.
Differentiated Hebrew program:
After assessing my student's individual needs in the areas of letter recognition, sequencing, reading and conversational ability, we have implemented a differentiated Hebrew program for Dalet (4th Grade) and Hey (5th Grade), which meets three times a week. At the start of each day, I work with my Hey class on our grade-level Hebrew curriculum, building upon a graded system of vocabulary and grammar. During the 2nd half of each Hebrew period, my students are then divided into ability-based groups, allowing them to further develop their skills in reading, writing, comprehension, conversation, and composition. The results have been great and the program well received by all students!
T’fillot
In the Prayer Companion to Shalom Ivrit, the students will learn the prayers of the Torah service and the concluding prayers in the Shabbat morning service.
Bible
Our text, Introduction to Kings, Later Prophets and Writings, takes the students on a Biblical journey; which begins with the reign of King David, then Solomon and the events that led to the tragic split of the Kingdom. It focuses on some notorious Kings in Israel and Judah as well as the famous Prophets who devoted their lives to guide the Jewish people and teach them the ways of God. Even though they worked diligently on these tasks, the Prophets often failed. In our work on the Writings, we will get a chance to study some of the Psalms, proverbs and the Book of Ruth.
Jewish Life
The goal of our text, Basic Judaism I: Israel, is to impart to our students a vocabulary of Jewish life in the general area of Israel. This text is an alphabetically arranged book of values related to the concept of Israel, ranging from Adam and Bet Knesset to Tzionut (Zionism) and Tefutzot (Diaspora). It shows just how broad the term “Israel” can be. It includes theology, ritual practice, love of the land and a host of values that point to the unique character of Judaism. We also hope that students will gain an appreciation of the historical and cultural significance of the State of Israel, and our link to it as American Jews
Special time will be devoted to teach our holidays and give the students a strong background in relation to their history, customs and prayer.
Classroom Procedures and Expectations
Kitah Hey students should be in class on time; class starts as soon as the bell rings! Students should have a kippah and required materials. Above all, student should be well behaved and respectful of their teachers, each other and their environment. Our classroom is in a synagogue, which is a holy place to all of us.
PACE
We look forward to having all Hey parents join us for our PACE program on Sunday morning, March 14, 2010.
Homework
Homework will be given every Thursday. The point of the assignments is to review, reinforce and enrich student’s Hebrew reading and vocabulary skills. In order to keep the students engaged, we’ve chosen materials from sources other than the lessons covered in class. Our weekly homework will also include a Torah portion booklet.
