Curriculum Overview - KITAH VAV JEWISH HEROES and PROJECT ETGAR
Teacher: Rachel Stempel
This year we will alternate between two different curricula on Sundays. The first is a class in modern Jewish heroes that I have taught for many years on the 6th grade level. The second is the Project Box of the Etgar Program that students are working on during the week.
GOALS FOR JEWISH HEROES
· to become familiar with modern Jewish heroes
· to distinguish between achievers, celebrities, and heroes
· to identify characteristics of heroes
· to learn several values that a Jewish hero might embrace, such as
Klal Yisrael (All Israel is one)
Pikuach Nefesh (Saving a life is like saving the world)
· to broaden our choice of role models
· to take pride in the accomplishments of our community
· to appreciate the sacrifices of Jews and non-Jews
ACTIVITIES
Each Sunday we will learn about a Jewish hero from our textbook or the newspapers. Sandy Koufax was an achiever and a celebrity. He was a Jewish hero too because he united the Jewish community. Jews then and today continue to be proud of his commitment to Judaism.
Though a young girl, Hannah Senesch volunteered to be a British paratrooper during WWII and helped to rescue British pilots shot down over Hungary. At the same time, she planned to lead Jews out of Budapest. Captured before she could complete her mission, she never revealed the secret radio code used by her companions.
Janus Korzshack, Yonatan Natanyahu, Stephen Speilberg, Chiune Sugihara, and others will be covered in the next months. We will also be reading parts of “The Diary of Anne Frank” in preparation for seeing the play in the spring.
PROJECT BOX
SOME EARLY GOALS FOR PROJECT ETGAR
While each of the Sunday classes devoted to Project Etgar will be introduced by the teacher, students will be able to work alone or in a group to complete projects designed to support lessons learned during the week. For example, we will create a time line to be displayed in the classroom. We will become familiar with the Sifrei Kodesh. Some students will create their own midrashim. We will look at biblical models of friendship. We will also learn to identify the symbols of Kashrut.
